Montreal Jazz Fest 2005 - Day 2

After a 5:20 pm monsoon swept through Montreal we headed up to the Spectrum for our first inside show of the festival: Bryan Lee. Although a 6:00 pm blues show is a little weird (it's just not the right time of day to be in a dark bar watching a down and dirty blues show). However within a few tunes Bryan Lee, second guitarist Brent Johnson and the rest of the band managed to convince their audience that this WAS blues time. BTW, plan on hearing about Brent Johnson - he was awesome. Oh, and just to keep the crowd on their toes they played the Allman Brothers "Whipping Post". When was the last time you heard that? Have I used the word awesome yet ?

At 10 pm at the TD Canada Trust stage I caught the Jon Ballantyne Quartet. One of the more modern, post-bop groups I caught this year with definite Thelonious Monk, Bill Evans influence to Jon Ballantyne's playing. These guys laid down a great groove over modern, slightly dissonant progressions and impassioned soloing. Douglas Yates bass clarinet solos brought back memories of listening to Eric Dolphy. The other players included bassist Boris Kozlov and drummer Jeff Hirshfield.

At 11 pm the Montreal Jazz Big Band - passion Afro-Cuban show on the main GM stage got everyone moving with their Afro-Cuban arrangements of jazz standards and classic afro-cuban tunes such as "A Night in Tunisia" and "Manteca"

Montreal Jazz Fest 2005 - Day 1

On a rather warm and humid Thurday evening (28C - felt like 35C with the humidity) we headed over to the Jazz Festival Site. Our first stop was the show by New York singer/guitarist Eric Bibb.
